The Mons were one of the earliest ethnic groups to be in both Burma and present day Thailand. Their language is part of the Mon-Khmer group of languages which unlike other languages in the area is not a tonal language.

They have been in present day Burma and parts of Thailand since about 3000 BC and were probably forced southwards form the South China and Tibet region. In both this and their language they are similar to the Khmers.
